Frequently asked questions

What counts as a high-performance e-bike?

On this site it means big voltage and real speed: 60V and 72V systems, motors in the 3,000W to 8,000W peak range, dual battery packs, full suspension, and four-piston hydraulic brakes on 203mm to 220mm rotors. The brakes and the suspension matter as much as the motor — a bike that goes 50 mph and stops like a 20 mph bike is a bad bike.

Are these bikes street legal?

Not as bicycles. Once a bike makes thousands of watts and tops 28 mph, it falls outside the US three-class e-bike system, and several of the bikes on this page are sold explicitly for private property and off-road use. Some models ship in a legal class and can be unlocked in the display — that's a choice you make, and the legal responsibility comes with it. Check your state and city rules first.

How fast do they actually go?

Faster than most people expect, and usually slower than the brand's headline. Ben runs top speed on GPS rather than trusting the display: the Magician Alpha hit 49 mph and the Ariel Rider Mudd 72V hit 58 mph against a claimed 65. The measured number is the one printed on each bike page.

What happens to range when you actually use the power?

It collapses. Wind resistance climbs with the square of speed, so riding at 45 mph burns energy several times faster than cruising at 20. The Mudd 72V is a good example: 80 to 120 miles claimed, 40-plus miles when Ben rode it hard. Buy the watt-hours you need for the speed you'll actually ride, not the number on the marketing page.

Are the batteries safe?

They are if they're certified, which is why every brand in this catalog is here. Look for UL 2271 on the battery pack and UL 2849 on the complete bike — that means the cells, the BMS, the charger and the wiring were tested together as a system. A 72V pack from an uncertified no-name brand is not a bargain, it's a fire in your garage.

Who should not buy one of these?

Anyone who needs to lift the bike onto a car rack or carry it up stairs — these run 130 to 150 lbs. Anyone whose only riding is bike paths and bike lanes, where the bike would be illegal and unwelcome. And anyone new to riding: 5,000W with a twist throttle deserves some road experience first.
