What to look for
Fold size
Check the folded dimensions on each page against your car boot, closet or train rules.
Weight
You lift it. The weight listed on each page matters more than motor power if you live above the ground floor.
Tyre size
20x4 in fat tyres ride smoother and cost range. Smaller tyres fold smaller.
Hinge
Look at the latch design and weight rating on the hinge. It is the one part of a folder that a normal bike does not have.
Prices and specs are the ones on each bike page. Only bikes flagged Reviewed or Ben Reviewed have a Cave Score or Ben's test numbers.

Frequently asked questions
How small does a folding e-bike actually get?
Roughly half its length, not a briefcase. Most folders here use a mid-frame hinge plus a folding stem, which gets you a package that fits in a car trunk, an RV bay or a closet — but it's still a bike-shaped object with pedals sticking out. Check the folded dimensions against the space you actually have before you buy.
Can you take a folding e-bike on a plane?
Not with the battery. Airlines cap lithium batteries far below what an e-bike uses — the usual limit is around 100 to 160 watt-hours with approval, and e-bike packs are typically 500 Wh and up. The bike can be shipped as freight, but you can't check or carry on the battery. Trains, buses and ferries are usually fine; check the operator's policy.
Do folding e-bikes ride worse than full-size bikes?
They ride differently. The 20-inch wheels and shorter wheelbase make the steering quicker and the bike less settled at speed, and small wheels drop into potholes that a 26-inch wheel rolls over. What you get back is a bike that's easy to manoeuvre, easy to store and easy to fit in your life — which is why people ride them more.
How heavy are they, really?
Heavier than you're picturing. A folding e-bike with a decent battery usually lands somewhere in the 50 to 70 lb range, and folding it doesn't remove any of that weight. If you'll be lifting it into a trunk or up stairs regularly, treat weight as the single most important spec on the page and be honest about what you can carry.
Is the folding hinge a weak point?
On a well-built bike, no. Look for a hinge with a proper cam lock and a secondary safety catch, and make a habit of checking it's fully closed before every ride the same way you'd check a quick-release. The frames from established brands in this catalog are built and tested for it; the risk lives in cheap unbranded folders.
Who is a folding e-bike really for?
Apartment dwellers without a garage, RV and boat owners, people who combine a bike with a train or bus, and anyone whose bike has to live inside. If you have a garage and never need to pack it away, a full-size bike gives you a better ride for the same money.
What is the cheapest folding e-bike here?
The Ride1Up Portola, From $895. The Heybike Ranger S and Lectric XP4 are both From $999.
Which folding e-bike has the longest range?
The Wallke H7 lists 130 miles, the Rattan LF Ultra 120 miles and the Heybike Ranger 3.0 Pro 90 miles. These are listed numbers, not Ben's test results.
Looking for an older folding model? Heybike Horizon is no longer sold new, so it is not listed above. See the discontinued e-bike archive for specs and what to check on a used one.
